Product Overview

Sodium Ligninsulfonate (CAS No. 8061-51-6) is a sodium salt of lignosulfonic acid and a sulfonated technical lignin material obtained from sulfite pulping of lignocellulosic feedstocks. Unlike a discrete low-molecular-weight compound, sodium lignosulfonate represents a structurally heterogeneous population of lignin-derived macromolecular species containing sulfonate and other oxygen-containing functional groups. Its anionic character and substantial water solubility enable interaction with dispersed particles, dissolved species and solid surfaces, giving the material its characteristic dispersing and surface-active behaviour.

Sodium Ligninsulfonate is therefore used primarily as a water-soluble dispersant, binder, stabilising aid and functional polymeric additive rather than as a reagent with one narrowly defined molecular reaction. Established technical applications include cement and concrete admixtures, dye and pigment dispersion, drilling-fluid systems, coal–water slurries, agricultural formulation systems and other aqueous particulate formulations. Its performance can vary with molecular-weight distribution, degree of sulfonation, ionic composition and source-processing history, making the exact material characteristics relevant when selecting it for a particular formulation or materials process.

Typical Applications

  • Water-reducing and dispersing admixtures in cement and concrete formulations.
  • Dispersant for dyes, pigments and other finely divided colouring materials in aqueous systems.
  • Dispersant or thinning agent in drilling-fluid and oil-well formulations.
  • Dispersant for coal–water slurries and other mineral or carbonaceous suspensions.
  • Binder and processing aid in selected particulate, ceramic and mineral-based formulations.
  • Dispersing component in agricultural formulations, including water-dispersible pesticide systems.
  • Stabilising, dispersing and surface-modifying component in research and development of aqueous polymeric and materials formulations.

Storage Conditions

Store tightly closed in a dry, clean environment and protect the material from unnecessary moisture exposure, since lignosulfonate products are water-soluble and their physical condition can change with moisture uptake. Keep the material protected from contamination and excessive heat, and promptly reseal the container after dispensing to maintain consistent handling and formulation characteristics.
