Product Overview

Sodium Hydroxide Flakes 97% Extra Pure (CAS No. 1310-73-2) is a strongly basic sodium hydroxide reagent supplied in flake form. In aqueous systems, it dissociates to provide hydroxide ions and produces strongly alkaline conditions suitable for neutralisation, hydrolysis, saponification and base-mediated synthesis. Sodium hydroxide readily interacts with atmospheric moisture and carbon dioxide, making environmental exposure relevant to preservation of weighed composition.

The Extra Pure grade is intended for general laboratory alkalisation, organic and inorganic synthesis, reagent preparation and routine processing requiring sodium hydroxide flakes. The flake form provides a practical solid format for weighing and dissolution without implying a particular flake dimension or dissolution rate.

Typical Applications

  • Preparation of strongly alkaline laboratory solutions.
  • Neutralisation of acidic reagents and reaction mixtures.
  • Saponification and alkaline hydrolysis reactions.
  • Base-mediated organic and inorganic synthesis.
  • pH adjustment in compatible laboratory systems.
  • Preparation of sodium salts from suitable acidic precursors.

Common Synonyms

  • Caustic soda
  • Sodium hydrate

Storage Conditions

Keep tightly closed and protect from atmospheric moisture and carbon dioxide to minimise changes in composition. Promptly reseal after dispensing and maintain clean handling to preserve the reagent for reproducible preparation.
