Product Overview

EDTA Disodium Salt Dihydrate 99% For Molecular Biology (CAS No. 6381-92-6) is the dihydrated disodium salt of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, a polyaminocarboxylic acid and multidentate chelating agent. Its four carboxylate groups and two nitrogen donor centres enable strong complex formation with numerous metal ions, particularly divalent cations such as calcium and magnesium. This metal-binding behaviour is central to the use of disodium EDTA in biochemical systems, where sequestration of available metal ions can alter metal-dependent reactions and enzymatic activity.

The Molecular Biology grade is intended for preparation of biological buffers and reagent systems used in nucleic-acid and biomolecular procedures. EDTA is routinely incorporated into formulations such as nucleic-acid extraction buffers and TE-type systems, where chelation of divalent cations helps limit metal-dependent nuclease activity and contributes to preservation of DNA and RNA during handling. It is also relevant to electrophoresis, cell lysis, enzyme studies and other molecular-biology workflows in which controlled availability of metal ions is required.
