Detailed information about the product

Product Overview

Benzyl Alcohol 98% Extra Pure (CAS No. 100-51-6) is a primary aromatic alcohol in which a hydroxymethyl group is attached directly to a benzene ring. The benzylic position combines alcohol functionality with stabilisation provided by the adjacent aromatic system, supporting characteristic oxidation, substitution, esterification, etherification, and carbon–oxygen bond transformations. This reactivity makes benzyl alcohol a useful parent substrate for preparing a variety of benzyl and benzoyl derivatives.

The Extra Pure grade is intended for routine organic synthesis, reaction development, catalyst evaluation, and selected solvent-based laboratory procedures requiring benzyl alcohol of defined assay. It is suitable for preparing aromatic aldehydes, carboxylic acids, esters, ethers, and other benzylic intermediates, and may also serve as a reaction medium or reactive solvent in specialised non-aqueous materials-synthesis procedures.

Typical Applications

  • Starting material for controlled oxidation to benzaldehyde and, under further oxidation, benzoic acid.
  • Preparation of benzyl esters through reaction with suitable carboxylic acids or activated acyl derivatives.
  • Synthesis of benzyl ethers and other oxygen-functionalised benzylic compounds using appropriate activation or catalytic procedures.
  • Preparation of benzyl halides and related intermediates through substitution of the hydroxyl functionality.
  • Model aromatic alcohol in catalytic oxidation, reduction, hydrogen-transfer, and reaction-selectivity studies.
  • Solvent or reaction medium in selected organic synthesis and catalyst-development procedures.
  • Reactive solvent in non-aqueous preparation of metal-oxide and mixed-oxide nanomaterials.

Common Synonyms

  • Benzenemethanol
  • Phenylmethanol
  • Phenylcarbinol
  • Phenylmethyl Alcohol
  • (Hydroxymethyl)benzene
  • α-Hydroxytoluene
  • α-Toluenol
  • Benzenecarbinol

Storage Conditions

Store in a tightly closed container in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area. Protect from direct light, excessive heat, ignition sources, prolonged exposure to air, and contamination. Close the container promptly after use, as environmental exposure can promote gradual oxidation and affect reagent quality.
