Product Overview

Ammonium Carbonate Extra Pure (CAS No. 506-87-6) is a volatile inorganic ammonium reagent conventionally represented as the carbonate salt of ammonium. Commercial ammonium carbonate materials may contain ammonium carbonate, ammonium bicarbonate, and ammonium carbamate species in variable proportions, providing ammonium and carbonate-containing species when introduced into aqueous systems. This composition gives the reagent useful alkaline, precipitating, and ammonia-releasing behaviour.

The Extra Pure grade is intended for routine laboratory preparation, inorganic and organic synthesis, research, and educational procedures. It is suitable for establishing ammoniacal carbonate media, supplying ammonium or carbonate species, preparing selected ammonium compounds, and carrying out precipitation or synthetic processes in which a readily decomposable inorganic reagent is advantageous.

Typical Applications

  • Preparation of ammonium carbonate solutions and alkaline reaction media
  • Source of ammonium and carbonate-containing species in laboratory procedures
  • Precipitation of selected metal ions as carbonates or basic carbonate compounds
  • Preparation of ammonium salts through reaction with suitable acids
  • Ammonia source in selected organic synthesis procedures
  • Preparation of inorganic and materials-related carbonate precursors
  • Routine research and educational studies involving ammonium–carbonate chemistry

Its use as an ammonia source in synthesis and as a carbonate precipitating reagent is established in preparative and materials-chemistry procedures.

Common Synonyms

  • Diammonium Carbonate
  • Carbonic Acid, Diammonium Salt
  • Carbonic Acid, Ammonium Salt (1:2)

Storage Conditions

Store in a tightly closed container in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated location. Protect the material from heat, atmospheric moisture, and prolonged exposure to air. Reseal the container promptly after dispensing to minimise the loss of ammonia and carbon dioxide and to preserve product composition and reagent quality.
