Product Overview

Potassium Nitrate 99% Extra Pure (CAS No. 7757-79-1) is an inorganic potassium salt of nitrate in which nitrogen is present in the +5 oxidation state. Nitrate is comparatively stable under ordinary aqueous conditions but can act as an oxidising component under appropriate chemical or thermal conditions. Potassium nitrate also provides a convenient source of potassium and nitrate ions for solution, inorganic and materials chemistry.

The Extra Pure grade is suited to routine synthesis, reagent preparation, ionic-media studies and general laboratory investigations requiring potassium nitrate.

Typical Applications

  • Source of nitrate ions in general laboratory and inorganic chemistry.
  • Preparation of potassium- and nitrate-containing reaction media.
  • Oxidising component in appropriate preparative and thermal reaction systems.
  • Inorganic salt and materials synthesis.
  • Molten-salt and phase-behaviour studies involving nitrate systems.
  • Electrochemical and solution-chemistry investigations requiring a nitrate electrolyte.

Common Synonyms

  • Saltpetre
  • Saltpeter
  • Nitre
  • Nitric acid potassium salt
  • Potassium nitrate

Storage Conditions

Keep tightly closed and dry to maintain reagent composition and prevent environmental contamination. Preserve the material from contamination with readily oxidisable organic or reducing substances, since such contamination can compromise nitrate behaviour in subsequent thermal or redox work.
